Asparagus Staging is an easy way to save fuel in KSP. Here is how it works: All engine will feed from one tank, for example, lets say its two side boosters supplying all the engines. When the side booster tanks are depleted, the tank in the main booster is still full, just now your higher up instead of just sitting on the launch pad.

Whereas serial staging involves stacked stages, parallel staging features one or multiple booster stages strapped to a central sustainer, as on the space shuttle. At launch, all the engines ignite. When their propellant runs out, the strapped-on boosters fall away. The sustainer engine keeps burning to put the payload into orbit.

I am a self-employed software developer who built this tool in my free time. Unfortunately, I can't work on stuff like this all the time as I have to make money to eat and live. The KSP Alternate Resource Panel is a plugin to the Kerbal Space program game and was created to provide me an alternate view of the resources list and also add some staging functionality to the map view. Confirmed here too. Only occurs during/after staging, and only sometimes. Incidentally it would be fantastic if there was permanent object/variable (perhaps something like STAGE:ACTIVE) telling you what stage is currently active. Autostaging is a nightmare at the moment.
Hello, I have just upgraded from 1.0.5 directly to 1.3 and many things confuse me. Particularly, fuel readings in the staging column. On an asparagus-staged rocket that worked fine in 1.0.5, the fuel gauges on the staging column for all the boosters show the same amount of fuel, even if some of them are empty, leading to me not knowing to stage until i was carrying four empty boosters.
Funds. People don't overbuild like crazy any more and try to send 400 ton landers to the Mun. Asparagus staging is awesome, but tedious.

Real engines and tanks weigh about a quarter what they do in KSP for the same thrust or tank volume, so the delta-V benefits are significantly reduced. (I haven't done the math on this, but I plan on doing the math to verify this).

Hello fellow aspiring KSP Rocket Scientists! In this Science Sunday article (as promised) we will go over the efficiency of Asparagus Staging as a useful method for getting your rockets into orbit and beyond and the orbital maneuvers (Hohmann Transfers, Bi-Elliptical Transfers, Transfer Orbits) and terms you may or may not need to know to help you navigate through space.

Just taking fuel efficiency into account, asparagus staging is the most efficient. When taking drag into account, it may have some impact on what's most efficient depending air pressure and rocket design. This is however easier to get away with since KSP 1.0 with redesigned drag formulas.

This is what is described as asparagus staging, because apparently somebody once thought the cluster of side columns made the rocket look like a clump of asparagus spears. Anyway, when side columns are both burning engines of their own as well as pumping fuel to central stages, that is asparagus staging.
The reason asparagus staging works is because you're discarding fuel tanks and engines as soon as possible.
